BACKGROUND The 1996 FA Cup Final was the 51st to be held at Wembley Stadium after the Second World War and was held between two of the biggest rivals in English football, Manchester United and Liverpool.
With just five minutes remaining on the clock, David James tried to punch a corner clear. The ball landed just outside the penalty area, at the feet of United captain Eric Cantona, who had scored in his comeback game after a seven-month suspension at Old Trafford against Liverpool earlier that season in a game that ended 2–2. Cantona hit his shot goalwards, through the crowded penalty area and the ball nestled in the back of the goal, winning the game for United.
The win was United's third FA Cup win under Alex Ferguson, having also won in 1990 and 1994. They became the first club to win the competition nine times, and also became the first club to win the league championship and FA Cup double on two occasions.
Liverpool’s away shirt throughout the 1998/99 season & 3rd shirt during the 1999/00 season.
This jersey was officially printed OWEN 'Michael James Owen' one of the Liverpool's Legends who in his first full season in the Premier League he finished as joint top scorer. He repeated the feat the following year and was Liverpool's top goal scorer from 1997–2004, in spite of a recurring hamstring injury. His first major club honours came in 2001 when Liverpool won a cup treble of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Football League Cup.
OWEN was awarded as 2001 Ballond'Or, given to the best football player in Europe as judged by a panel of sports journalists from UEFA member countries on 18 December 2001.
OWEN was the fourth English national to win the award after Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), and Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979). He was also the first Liverpool player to win the trophy.
Old Trafford has the second-largest capacity of any English football stadium after Wembley Stadium, the third-largest of any stadium in the UK, and the eleventh-largest in Europe. It is one of two stadia in the country to have been given a five-star rating by UEFA. The stadium is approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from Old Trafford Cricket Ground and the adjacent Manchester Metrolink tram station. The ground, given the nickname the Theatre of Dreams by Bobby Charlton, has been United's permanent residence since 1910, with the exception of an eight-year absence from 1941 to 1949, following the bombing of the stadium in the Second World War.
