Liverpool FC's Goalkeeper Shirt - 1996 to 1998 (David James)
James was considered one of England's best and brightest keepers when he was establishing himself at Watford. Arriving at Liverpool he vowed to become the club's first-choice keeper and England's as well inside two years. James didn't start his LFC career very promisingly and critics were happy to write him off after failing at the first hurdle. But he was able to pick himself up and managed to remove Grobbelaar as first-choice. He was making the odd mistake but that was a fact that LFC's fans had grown quite accostumed to after watching Grobbelaar's wild antics. But unlike the past Liverpool were not winning each game despite the goalkeeper's errors and when James made a mistake it was the reason behind Liverpool's defeat that particular evening.
Contrary to people's expectations James seemed to become less confident as the years passed by at Liverpool and one high pass into the penalty area was basically what was needed because the opposition knew he would have trouble controlling it. James has since had a successful career with a number of clubs and has a healthy number of international caps to his name.

This away jersey to commemorate just four days after dramatically snatching the FA Cup from Arsenal's grasp in Cardiff, and with the Worthington Cup already safely tucked away in the Anfield trophy cabinet, Liverpool's class of 2001 completed an unprecedented cup treble on the never-to-be-forgotten night of Wednesday 16 May.
Gerard Houllier (LFC manager 1998-2004): I think the players played for history, played for immortality really because I don’t think any club ANYWHERE, not only in England, had managed to win three cups in one year.
Phil Thompson (LFC assistant manager 1998-2004): Again, the pundits were labelling us as boring and that it was going to be a 0-0 game, with it going to penalties or whatever. As it happens we gave one of the best European finals since a certain 7-3 game involving Real Madrid in the sixties.

Reebok again returned to the tried and tested white shirts and black shorts combination. The shirt included many interesting features, including breathable mesh panels, red and black piping and a faint shadow pinstripe. The Carlsberg logo was included in their corporate colour. This strip was promoted by a nice Reebok ad campaign linking the shirt with the lyrics of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
Worn in: A 1–0 win over Manchester Utd – the only League away match won in this strip. Also, a 4–2 defeat to Arsenal at HIghbury.

2002-2003 was the first season Liverpool had ever played in a black strip. The away shirt design, with a visible horizontal seam and grey shoulder patches, combined well with the hi-tech Play Dry fabric to give an intimidating look. The shirt was actually similar to that of the home kit, but included a slim-line V-neck rather than a round one.
Worn in: The 1–0 defeat to Arsenal in the 02–03 Community Shield match. Also, 1–0 wins over Aston Villa and Southampton – the only League away matches won in this strip – plus a great 3–1 win over Spartak Moscow.

The true quote was less a jibe at his city rivals and more of an understanding into Shankly's belief that winning was everything. "A lot of football success is in the mind. Following their £100 million sponsorship deal, the first United kit to be made by US sports giant Nike didn't disappoint. Classic red, white and black, the material was lightweight and stretchy with an inner mesh lining which went on to cause trouble for Diego Forlan as he struggled to get it back on after scoring. Aware of the media frenzy that went with Manchester United kit changes, Nike added a Life Span Label to the inside of the jersey stating 'Launch Date 01/06/2002 life span: May 2004'.

1995-1997 - Manchester United third kitMUFC 'Official Merchandise'
Whoever designed United's 1995 third strip probably never worked for Umbro again. Based on the Manchester United kit worn between 1903 and 1916, it was a terrible Sheffield Wednesday look-a-like kit. It was also worn in the abysmal 6-3 defeat at Southampton. On the positive side, it featured, 'watermarked' into the fabric, the name of every player to have ever appeared for the club and the original Manchester United crest. It was also worn at The Riverside when United collected yet another Premiership crown.
Middle of the jersey printed ECF 1968. This is to commemorate the 13th ECF ('European Cup Final') in 1967-68, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Manchester United, who beat Benfica 4-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, London on 28May68. This is the 1st European Cup title for MUFC. The European Cup title marked the tenth year since the Munich air disaster, in which 8 United players were killed and their manager, Matt Busby, was left close to death.

Umbro had obviously employed somebody new to design the kits for the 1998-99 season as another superb example replaced the short-lived blue kit from the season before. Previously a training top, the all black kit made its appearance at the awful 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in September 1998 however still became a favourite of the fans.

This fantastic Umbro design was released after a massive international advertising campaign with the slogan, "The World Is United - Be A Part Of It". A fashionable shirt that could be worn away from the match, it had the words 'Sharp Digital' emblazoned on it. Worn with black shorts and socks, it was also the kit selected for the game at Southampton when United clinched another Championship. The itchy woollen material put some people off though.

1982-84 Manchester United home shirt
The 1982 season witnessed a subtle change to the home shirt, with the advertising slogan 'Sharp Electronics' being cut down to just 'Sharp'. They wore the same shirt (with sponsors name) for European and Cup matches, including the classics against Juventus and Barcelona. The rest of the kit stayed the same. Man Utd Shirts 1984-1986
This is another away shirt with change in design throughout the decade with Adidas liking the v neck look. The most dramatic change was the 1984-86 shirts that saw United's badge move into the centre of the top and the Adidas logo appearing on the shirt sleeves. This design is still one of the fan's favourite United kits ever worn.
